About Us
Who are the members of Penny Creek? The band was formed by a group of
friends, but has grown to be much more. Along the way we have added members and
feature a varying lineup. As our members' reputations grow, we find ourselves in
demand in a variety of ways--almost all of the players play in more than one
band! So this is less of a "band member" list than a "cast of
characters", and the exact cast you encounter when you see Penny Creek
could include everybody listed here, or just about any combination of these
pickers, and you may also see a surprise guest or two!
Ralph Cox: Guitar and
Vocals
Born and raised in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania,
Ralph has played in various bluegrass bands in his 35 years as a musician. He
fondly remembers his childhood growing up along
with his friend Del McCoury. We jammed a lot together back then and had some
good times, Ralph remembers. Ralph sings a million songs and plays guitar in the
band. He's a
crowd pleaser for sure and a jokester at times. Everybody loves Ralph and we're very fortunate to have
him on
stage with us.
Randy King: Bass
Born in Ashville, North Carolina, Randy began his musical experiences as a
young child with the drums. For 20 years he played in bands such as "The
Outcast," "Tony Kay and the Heartbeats" and the
"Bonnevilles." Music was engrained in his blood with both his
grandfathers being professional musicians and his Dad a professional as well
playing tenor sax in the "Paul Whitman Band." Randy dabbled with the saxophone
for about 6 years then moved to Florida in 1956. In 1965, Randy added the
doghouse style Bass to his repertoire. His love for Bluegrass music began around
1972 and is still playing Bass every chance he gets today. Randy's not stopping
there, he picked up the mandolin in 2005 and is just lovin' it.
Britt Holbrook: Guitar and
Vocals
Born in Clanton, Alabama, Britt's interest in bluegrass
and gospel music was kindled at an early age of 10 when he began playing
guitar . He grew up in a musical family with his Mom, Dad and Sisters all
playing various instruments and singing all the time. Every Sunday when they
attended church Britt says, " We'd get our as#es kicked if we didn't
sing." With Britt's strong bluegrass vocals he is definitely a crowd
pleaser and a big asset to the band.
Bo Frazer: Fiddle, Mandolin, and
Vocals

“Smokin” Bo Frazer is a multi-instrumentalist of considerable note. A native of Pennsylvania , Bo has been a touring musician most of his life and has performed at just
about every venue on the East Coast at least once. He has
played at the Diamond Horseshoe Revue at Disneyworld, Cheyenne Saloon at Church
Street Station and has performed throughout the country playing everything from
bluegrass to western swing. Bo is accomplished on
guitar, pedal steel, mandolin, fiddle, and bass. He is well versed in a variety of styles
including Blues, Country, Cajun, Bluegrass, and
Celtic. Bo has the high energy and sense of humor that audiences love.
Steve Thorpe: Dobro, Guitar, and Vocals
Steve brings a wealth of musical experience with him when he takes the stage
with Penny Creek. He has been a fixture in the Melbourne Area music scene for 20+
years, and has had his own Blues band for the past 10 years called " Steve Thorpe and
the Blues Orchestra." He has released 2 CD's, "Trouble," and the latest being
"Live, Down
and Dirty," which was released July of 2006. Steve was born in Winchester, Kentucky
where he first picked up the dobro at the age of 10. At the age of 13, Steve
started playing guitar with his brother Jimmy. Soon they were in several blues
bands together and even performed live on the radio several times as
teenagers. Steve
remembers back in high school when his brother would always start up the blues
bands and Steve would always break them up. Imagine that, he was even causing
trouble back then. But seriously, we're always glad when Steve can join us. He's
just awesome!!
Susan Pounds: Mandolin, Guitar and
Vocals

Born in New Orleans and raised in Alabama, Susan moved to Melbourne, Florida
in 1986. She started playing guitar in 1987 when her son decided after 2 months
of lessons that it was not for him. By then she fell in love with the guitar and soon
after found her groove in Bluegrass music. She attributes her husbands
sister, Bonnie Phillips, and Gary Waldrep of the The Gary Waldrep Band for
exposing her to bluegrass music. Susan started
playing the mandolin back in 2000 and is still playing it today. Her strong vocals
and leading personality makes her the perfect leader of the band.
Lee Phelps- Banjo and Guitar
Born
in Lexington, North Carolina, Lee has been playing music since the age of nine.
He is an incredibly versatile musician that can play guitar, bass, mandolin and
banjo. He played the bluegrass festival circuit in the late 80's with the
group Mill Creek and has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with
bluegrass greats such as Bill Grant, Delia Bell, Toby Stroud, and the
notable Chubby Wise. He was awarded the "Florida
Old Time Music Flat Picking Championship" in 2007. His many talents
have been a positive addition to the Penny Creek Band.
